Who Seeks God?

Name Date

Read the Story

The title of Psalm 53 calls it a contemplation by David. It begins with a fool. The fool has said in his heart, There is no God. People like this do evil things.

God looks down from heaven on the children of men. He looks to see if any understand and seek after God. Every one of them has gone back. There is no one who does good, no, not one.

The psalm ends with hope. David wishes that the salvation of Israel would come out of Zion. When God brings his people back, Jacob shall rejoice and Israel shall be glad.

“God looks down from heaven on the children of men, to see if there are any who understood, who seek after God.”

Psalms 53 · Grade 4

The Fool and the Searching God

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 53 is a contemplation by David, set to the tune of Mahalath, as the title says. It begins, The fool has said in his heart, There is no God. In the Bible, a fool is not someone who lacks brains. A fool is someone who lives as if God does not matter.

God looks down from heaven to see if anyone seeks him. The answer is sad: every one of them has gone back. They have become filthy together. There is no one who does good, no, not one. Even so, the workers of iniquity eat up God's people and do not call on God.

The psalm closes with longing. Oh that the salvation of Israel would come out of Zion! When God brings his people back from captivity, Jacob shall rejoice. Psalm 53 is almost the same as Psalm 14, which shows how important this message is.

Show What You Know

  1. What is a fool in the Bible's sense?

  2. What does God find when he looks down?

  3. What do the workers of iniquity fail to do?

  4. Which psalm is almost the same as Psalm 53?

Psalms 53 · Grade 5

No One Does Good

Name Date

Read and Think

The title of Psalm 53 calls it a contemplation by David. The psalm nearly repeats Psalm 14. The fool has said in his heart, There is no God. This is less a debate about whether God exists than a way of living: people who ignore God become corrupt and do abominable iniquity.

God looks down from heaven on the children of men, to see if there are any who understood, who seek after God. The verdict is total: every one of them has gone back, and there is no one who does good, no, not one. In the New Testament, Paul quotes this teaching in Romans 3 to show that all people need God's rescue.

Yet the psalm is not hopeless. Those who attack God's people end in great fear, and the psalm longs for the salvation of Israel to come out of Zion. When God brings back his people from captivity, Jacob shall rejoice and Israel shall be glad. The need is universal, but so is the hope.

Show What You Know

  1. Why is saying there is no God a way of living, not just an idea?

  2. What is God looking for when he looks down?

  3. How does the New Testament use this teaching?

  4. Where does the psalm say salvation will come from?
