Psalms 52 · Grade 5

Rooted in God's House

Name Date

Read and Think

The title of Psalm 52 links it to the time when Doeg the Edomite told Saul, David has come to Ahimelech's house. The psalm addresses a mighty man who boasts of mischief. He loves all devouring words, lying rather than speaking the truth.

David answers the boaster with God's character: God's loving kindness endures continually. The man who uprooted others will himself be rooted out of the land of the living. His failure is named plainly: he didn't make God his strength, but trusted in the abundance of his riches and strengthened himself in his wickedness.

The psalm turns with the words But as for me. David pictures himself as a green olive tree in God's house, planted where God is. Olive trees grow slowly, live for generations and keep bearing fruit. The contrast is between a man uprooted by his own pride and a man rooted in God's love. David ends by promising thanks and hope in God's good name.
