Psalms 52 · Grade 4
Lies or Loving Kindness
Read and Think
The title of Psalm 52 calls it a contemplation by David. The title says it was written when Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul that David had come to Ahimelech's house. The psalm speaks to a mighty man who boasts of mischief. His tongue plots destruction like a sharp razor, and he loves evil more than good.
Against all this, David sets one great truth: God's loving kindness endures continually. God will root the boaster out of the land of the living. The righteous will see it and say this is the man who didn't make God his strength, but trusted in the abundance of his riches.
David chooses another way. He says, I am like a green olive tree in God's house. An olive tree can live for many years and keep bearing fruit. David trusts in God's loving kindness forever and ever, and he will hope in God's name in the presence of the saints.
