Favor as With a Shield

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 5's title gives musical directions: For the Chief Musician, with the flutes. A Psalm by David. It is a morning prayer. David asks Yahweh to give ear to his words and consider his meditation, calling him my King and my God. In the morning he will lay his requests before Yahweh and will watch expectantly, like a guard waiting for dawn.

The psalm contrasts God's holiness with human evil. God has no pleasure in wickedness, the arrogant will not stand in his sight, and Yahweh abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man. David does not claim to be good enough on his own. He comes into God's house in the abundance of God's loving kindness and bows toward God's holy temple in reverence. In the New Testament, Romans 3:13 uses the words of verse 9 about an open tomb to show that all people need God's grace.

David asks God to lead him and make God's way straight before him. He asks God to hold his enemies guilty, for they have rebelled against God. The psalm closes with a wide invitation: let all who take refuge in God rejoice, and let those who love his name be joyful. Yahweh will bless the righteous and surround him with favor as with a shield.
