Psalms 5 · Grade 4
Watching for God
Read and Think
The title of Psalm 5 says it is for the Chief Musician, with the flutes, and that it is a Psalm by David. David asks Yahweh to listen to his words, his meditation, and his cry. He calls God my King and my God. Then he says: Yahweh, in the morning you will hear my voice. In the morning I will lay my requests before you, and will watch expectantly.
David knows God's character. God has no pleasure in wickedness, and evil can't live with him. The arrogant will not stand in his sight. David says God will destroy those who speak lies. David does not come to God by his own goodness. He comes into God's house in the abundance of God's loving kindness.
David asks God to lead him in righteousness because of his enemies, who have no faithfulness in their mouth. He asks God to hold them guilty. Then the psalm turns to joy. All who take refuge in God should rejoice and shout for joy, because God defends them. God will bless the righteous and surround him with favor as with a shield.
