A Very Present Help in Trouble
Read and Think
Psalm 46's title says it is For the Chief Musician, By the sons of Korah, according to Alamoth. It opens with a bold statement: God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. A refuge is a safe place to run to. Because God is near, the people say, Therefore we won't be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas, though its waters roar and are troubled.
In contrast to the roaring sea, the psalm describes a gentle river: There is a river, the streams of which make the city of God glad. God is within her. She shall not be moved. The nations rage, but God lifts his voice. Twice the people say, Yahweh of Armies is with us. The God of Jacob is our refuge. Then God himself speaks: Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations.
