Psalms 45 · Grade 4

The King and His Bride

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 45's title says it is For the Chief Musician, set to The Lilies, a contemplation by the sons of Korah, and a wedding song. The text does not name which king it is. The singer says his tongue is like the pen of a skillful writer. He praises the king: You are the most excellent of the sons of men. Grace has anointed your lips. The king is told to ride on in majesty on behalf of truth, humility, and righteousness.

Then the psalm says, Your throne, God, is forever and ever. A scepter of equity is the scepter of your kingdom. You have loved righteousness, and hated wickedness. In the New Testament, Hebrews quotes these verses about the Son, Jesus (Hebrews 1:8-9). The second half turns to the bride. She is told to listen and to honor the king. The princess inside is all glorious. She is led to the king with gladness and rejoicing into the palace.
