A Friend Who Turned Away

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 41's title says it is For the Chief Musician and is A Psalm by David. It begins with a blessing: Blessed is he who considers the poor. To consider the poor is to pay careful attention to people in need. God promises to deliver such a person in the day of evil, to keep him alive, and to sustain him on his sickbed. Then David prays for himself: Yahweh, have mercy on me! Heal me, for I have sinned against you.

David was sick, and his enemies hoped he would die. They whispered and imagined the worst. Worst of all, Yes, my own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, who ate bread with me, has lifted up his heel against me. In the New Testament, Jesus quotes this verse about Judas, the friend who betrayed him (John 13:18). Still, David trusts God: You uphold me in my integrity, and set me in your presence forever. In many Bibles, this psalm ends Book One of the Psalms with Amen and amen.
