Psalms 4 · Grade 5
Gladness More Than Harvest
Read and Think
Psalm 4's title gives directions for worship: For the Chief Musician; on stringed instruments. A Psalm by David. The psalm begins as a direct prayer to the God of my righteousness, the God who stands behind what is right. David asks for relief from distress and for mercy.
The middle of the psalm speaks to people who love vanity and seek after falsehood. David reminds them that Yahweh has set apart the godly for himself and will hear when he calls. He urges them to stand in awe and not sin, to search their hearts on their beds and be still, to offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and to put their trust in Yahweh. In the New Testament, Ephesians 4:26 echoes this verse, telling believers to be angry without sinning.
Many say, Who will show us any good? David's answer is a prayer for the light of God's face, which echoes the priestly blessing of Numbers 6. The gladness God gives is greater than the joy of a rich harvest of grain and new wine. So the psalm ends in rest: In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you alone, Yahweh, make me live in safety.
