Psalms 38 · Grade 4
Too Heavy for Me
Read and Think
Psalm 38's title says it is A Psalm by David, for a memorial. It is a prayer of a man suffering under the weight of his sin. David begins, Yahweh, don't rebuke me in your wrath, neither chasten me in your hot displeasure. He says there is no health in his bones because of his sin. For my iniquities have gone over my head. As a heavy burden, they are too heavy for me. He is faint and bowed down, and he groans because of the anguish of his heart.
He feels alone. His friends stand aloof, and enemies speak evil against him. Yet David does not argue back. He is like a deaf man who doesn't hear. For I hope in you, Yahweh. You will answer, Lord my God. He decides, For I will declare my iniquity. I will be sorry for my sin. He closes, Hurry to help me, Lord, my salvation. In the New Testament, John writes that if we confess our sins, God is faithful to forgive (1 John 1:9).
