Psalms 30 · Grade 5

Mourning Turned to Dancing

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 30's title says it is A Psalm, A Song for the Dedication of the Temple, By David. The title gives the occasion of the song, though the psalm itself centers on David's personal rescue. He begins, I will extol you, Yahweh, for you have raised me up, and have not made my foes to rejoice over me. He cried to Yahweh and was healed. Yahweh, you have brought up my soul from Sheol. You have kept me alive.

Out of this experience comes a lesson for all God's people. Sing praise to Yahweh, you saints of his. For his anger is but for a moment. His favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may stay for the night, but joy comes in the morning. The contrast of a moment and a lifetime, night and morning, shows that sorrow is real but temporary for those who trust God.

David then admits a mistake. In my prosperity, I said, I shall never be moved. His confidence had drifted from God to his own success. When God hid his face, he was troubled, and he pleaded for mercy, asking whether the dust could praise God. God answered: You have turned my mourning into dancing for me. You have removed my sackcloth, and clothed me with gladness, to the end that my heart may sing praise to you, and not be silent. God's rescue had a purpose: lifelong praise. Yahweh my God, I will give thanks to you forever!
