Read the Story

The title says this is a Psalm by David, when he fled from Absalom his son. David had many adversaries. Many rose up against him. Many said there was no help for him in God.

David did not agree. He said Yahweh is a shield around him. God was his glory and the one who lifts up his head. David cried to Yahweh, and God answered him out of his holy hill.

Even in trouble, David lay down and slept. He woke up again, for Yahweh sustained him. He would not be afraid of tens of thousands of people around him. He asked God to save him. He ended with this truth: Salvation belongs to Yahweh.

Sleeping in Trouble

Name Date

Read and Think

The title of Psalm 3 says it is a Psalm by David, when he fled from Absalom his son. The psalm begins with David's trouble: his adversaries have increased, and many rise up against him. Many say of him that there is no help for him in God.

David answers with trust. Yahweh is a shield around him, his glory, and the one who lifts up his head. When David cries to Yahweh, God answers him out of his holy hill. The word Selah appears three times in this short psalm. It may be a musical sign, but its exact meaning is not known.

Then comes a surprising line: I laid myself down and slept. I awakened, for Yahweh sustains me. David will not be afraid of tens of thousands of people. He asks God to arise and save him. The psalm ends with praise: Salvation belongs to Yahweh. May your blessing be on your people.

The Lifter of My Head

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 3 is the first psalm with a title. The title says it is a Psalm by David, when he fled from Absalom his son. The psalm itself does not retell the story; it gives David's prayer. His adversaries have increased, and many say there is no help for him in God.

David turns from the voices of his enemies to Yahweh, who is a shield around him, his glory, and the one who lifts up his head. A head hanging low is a picture of shame or sorrow; God is the one who lifts it. David cries to Yahweh with his voice, and Yahweh answers him out of his holy hill. The word Selah appears three times; its exact meaning is uncertain, though it may be a musical direction.

The center of the psalm is restful trust. David lies down, sleeps, and wakes again because Yahweh sustains him. He will not be afraid of tens of thousands set against him. He calls on Yahweh to arise and save him, and he ends not with himself but with God's people: Salvation belongs to Yahweh. May your blessing be on your people.
