Psalms 3 · Grade 4
Sleeping in Trouble
Read and Think
The title of Psalm 3 says it is a Psalm by David, when he fled from Absalom his son. The psalm begins with David's trouble: his adversaries have increased, and many rise up against him. Many say of him that there is no help for him in God.
David answers with trust. Yahweh is a shield around him, his glory, and the one who lifts up his head. When David cries to Yahweh, God answers him out of his holy hill. The word Selah appears three times in this short psalm. It may be a musical sign, but its exact meaning is not known.
Then comes a surprising line: I laid myself down and slept. I awakened, for Yahweh sustains me. David will not be afraid of tens of thousands of people. He asks God to arise and save him. The psalm ends with praise: Salvation belongs to Yahweh. May your blessing be on your people.
