Psalms 29 · Grade 5

Power in the Storm, Peace for His People

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 29's title says it is a Psalm by David. It opens in heaven with a call to the sons of the mighty, perhaps heavenly beings: Ascribe to Yahweh glory and strength. Ascribe to Yahweh the glory due to his name. Worship Yahweh in holy array. If even mighty ones must bow, how much more should people on earth.

The center of the psalm is a storm. The phrase Yahweh's voice appears seven times like rolling thunder. The storm seems to move from the waters, across the great cedars of Lebanon and Mount Sirion, to the wilderness of Kadesh. Yahweh's voice breaks the cedars, strikes with flashes of lightning, shakes the wilderness, makes the deer calve, and strips the forests bare. This psalm gives all the glory for the storm to Yahweh. In his temple everything says, Glory!

The final verses move from noise to calm. Yahweh sat enthroned at the Flood. Yes, Yahweh sits as King forever. The God who ruled over the waters of Noah's day still rules. The psalm closes with a gentle promise: Yahweh will give strength to his people. Yahweh will bless his people with peace. In the New Testament, Jesus shows this same power when he calms a storm with a word (Mark 4:39).
