Psalms 29 · Grade 4

A Thunderstorm of Praise

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 29's title says it is a Psalm by David. It begins with a call to worship: Ascribe to Yahweh, you sons of the mighty, ascribe to Yahweh glory and strength. To ascribe means to give credit. The psalm then describes a mighty storm as a picture of God's power. The phrase Yahweh's voice is repeated seven times, like seven claps of thunder.

Yahweh's voice is on the waters. It is powerful and full of majesty. It breaks the cedars of Lebanon, strikes with flashes of lightning, shakes the wilderness, and strips the forests bare. In his temple everything says, Glory! The psalm ends calmly. Yahweh sat enthroned at the Flood, and he sits as King forever. The God who rules the storm will give strength to his people and bless his people with peace.
