A Prayer for Guidance

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 25's title says it is By David. In Hebrew it is an acrostic poem, with verses that mostly begin with the letters of the alphabet in order. David begins, To you, Yahweh, I lift up my soul. He trusts that no one who waits for God will be shamed. His main request is for guidance: Show me your ways, Yahweh. Teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth, and teach me.

David knows he needs forgiveness too. Don't remember the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions. Remember me according to your loving kindness. He says that because Yahweh is good and upright, he will instruct sinners in the way. The friendship of Yahweh is with those who fear him. Though David feels lonely and has many enemies, he says, My eyes are ever on Yahweh. He ends praying for all of Israel.

Waiting, Learning, and Forgiven

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 25's title says it is By David. In Hebrew it is an acrostic, its verses mostly beginning with the next letter of the alphabet, a way of saying everything from A to Z. The psalm weaves together three requests: protection, guidance, and forgiveness. David opens with trust: To you, Yahweh, I lift up my soul. My God, I have trusted in you. Don't let me be shamed.

Guidance is the heart of the psalm. Show me your ways, Yahweh. Teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth. David bases his hope on God's character: Good and upright is Yahweh, therefore he will instruct sinners in the way. He will teach the humble his way. All the paths of Yahweh are loving kindness and truth to those who keep his covenant. The friendship of Yahweh is with those who fear him.

Forgiveness runs through the whole poem. David asks God not to remember the sins of his youth and to pardon his iniquity, for it is great. Later he prays, Forgive all my sins. He is desolate and afflicted, with many enemies, yet he waits for God and takes refuge in him. The last verse widens the prayer: God, redeem Israel out of all his troubles. In the New Testament, believers learn that God forgives sin through Jesus (Acts 10:43).

Show What You Know

  1. What three requests does Psalm 25 weave together?

  2. Why will God instruct sinners?

  3. What are the paths of Yahweh for those who keep his covenant?

  4. How does the New Testament say God forgives sin?
