Psalms 24 · Grade 5

The King of Glory Comes In

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 24's title says it is a Psalm by David. It opens with a sweeping claim: The earth is Yahweh's, with its fullness; the world, and those who dwell in it. For he has founded it on the seas. Nothing is outside God's ownership, including every person. In the New Testament, Paul quotes verse 1 to remind believers that all food comes from the Lord (1 Corinthians 10:26).

The middle section asks the worshiper's question: Who may ascend to Yahweh's hill? Who may stand in his holy place? The answer describes both outward conduct and inward devotion: He who has clean hands and a pure heart; who has not lifted up his soul to falsehood, and has not sworn deceitfully. He shall receive a blessing from Yahweh, righteousness from the God of his salvation. This is the generation of those who seek him.

The final section is dramatic. The ancient gates are commanded, Lift up your heads, you gates! Be lifted up, you everlasting doors, and the King of glory will come in. The question Who is the King of glory? is answered twice: Yahweh strong and mighty, Yahweh mighty in battle; and finally, Yahweh of Armies is the King of glory! Christians also sing it to celebrate Christ as the King of glory, as the New Testament calls him the Lord of glory (1 Corinthians 2:8).

  • What is one way you could live out this chapter this week?
