Psalms 22 · Grade 4

A Cry That Becomes a Song

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 22's title says it is for the Chief Musician, set to The Doe of the Morning, and is a Psalm by David. It begins with one of the saddest cries in the Bible: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? The writer cries day and night and feels unanswered. Yet he remembers that God is holy and that Israel's fathers trusted God and were delivered. He describes being mocked, surrounded by enemies, weak, and thirsty, and he says, They divide my garments among them. They cast lots for my clothing.

Then the psalm turns. Yes, you have rescued me. The writer promises to declare God's name to his brothers in the assembly. God has not despised the affliction of the afflicted, but when he cried to him, he heard. All the ends of the earth shall turn to Yahweh, and future generations shall be told about the Lord. In the New Testament, Jesus cries the opening words on the cross (Matthew 27:46), and the soldiers cast lots for his clothing (John 19:24).

  2. The psalm ends with the whole world hearing about God. How can you help tell the next generation about the Lord?

Memory Verse

“For he has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted, neither has he hidden his face from him; but when he cried to him, he heard.”
