Psalm 2 begins with a question. Why do the nations rage? The kings of the earth plan against Yahweh. They plan against his Anointed. That means God's chosen king.

But God sits in the heavens. He is not afraid. He says he has set his King on Zion, his holy hill. Yahweh said to the King, You are my son. The psalm tells the kings to serve Yahweh with fear. Blessed are all those who take refuge in him.

Why Do the Nations Rage?

Name Date

Read the Story

Psalm 2 asks, Why do the nations rage? The kings and rulers of the earth take counsel together. They plan against Yahweh and against his Anointed, the king God has chosen. They want to break free from God's rule.

He who sits in the heavens will laugh. Their plans cannot win. God says he has set his King on his holy hill of Zion. The King tells of the decree. Yahweh said to him, You are my son. God promises to give him the nations, even the uttermost parts of the earth.

So the psalm tells the kings to be wise. They should serve Yahweh with fear and rejoice with trembling. The last line is good news: Blessed are all those who take refuge in him.

Memory Verse

Psalms 2 · Grade 4

The Lord and His Anointed

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 2 opens with a question: Why do the nations rage, and the peoples plot a vain thing? The kings of the earth take a stand against Yahweh and against his Anointed. Anointed means the one God has chosen and set apart, like a king anointed with oil. The rulers want to break their bonds apart and throw off God's rule.

God is not worried. He who sits in the heavens will laugh. Then he speaks to them in his anger. He declares that he has set his King on his holy hill of Zion. The King tells of the decree. Yahweh said to him, You are my son. Today I have become your father. God promises him the nations for his inheritance.

The psalm closes with a warning and an invitation. The kings and judges of the earth should be wise, serve Yahweh with fear, and give sincere homage to the Son. The final words are a blessing for all those who take refuge in him.

Psalms 2 · Grade 5

You Are My Son

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 2, like Psalm 1, has no title. It moves through several voices: the rebellious nations, God in heaven, the Anointed King, and a speaker who warns the rulers. The kings take counsel against Yahweh and against his Anointed, saying they will break their bonds apart and cast their cords from them.

God's response is calm. He who sits in the heavens will laugh, and the Lord will have them in derision. He has set his King on Zion, his holy hill. The King then tells of the decree: Yahweh said to him, You are my son. Today I have become your father. The nations will be his inheritance, and he will break them with a rod of iron.

The psalm ends by urging the kings of the earth to be wise: serve Yahweh with fear, rejoice with trembling, and give sincere homage to the Son. Its last line widens the invitation: Blessed are all those who take refuge in him. In the New Testament, Acts 13:33 and Hebrews 1:5 apply the words You are my son to Jesus.
