Psalms 18 · Grade 4

A Song of Deliverance

Name Date

Read and Think

The title of Psalm 18 says David spoke this song in the day that Yahweh delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. A very similar song appears in 2 Samuel 22. David begins with love: I love you, Yahweh, my strength. Then he piles up pictures, calling Yahweh his rock, fortress, deliverer, shield, the horn of his salvation, and his high tower.

David remembers deep trouble, like cords of death around him. In his distress he cried to God, and God heard. The psalm describes God coming down with earthquake, dark clouds, thunder, and lightning, then reaching down to draw David out of many waters. He delivered me, because he delighted in me. David also praises God's character: As for God, his way is perfect. Yahweh's word is tried. He lights my lamp and gives strength for every battle, and the psalm ends with praise for great deliverance.
