My Portion and My Cup

Read and Think

Psalm 16's title says it is a Poem by David. David begins, Preserve me, God, for I take refuge in you. He confesses, You are my Lord. Apart from you I have no good thing. He delights in the saints, but he will not join those who give gifts to another god. Yahweh assigned his portion and his cup. The lines have fallen to him in pleasant places, like boundary lines on good land.

David blesses Yahweh, who has given him counsel. I have set Yahweh always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. So his heart is glad. He says, For you will not leave my soul in Sheol, neither will you allow your holy one to see corruption. In the New Testament, Peter says David was speaking about the resurrection of Christ (Acts 2:25-31). The psalm ends, You will show me the path of life. In your presence is fullness of joy.

Psalms 16 · Grade 5

The Path of Life

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 16's title says it is a Poem by David. It is a psalm of deep contentment. David begins with a prayer, Preserve me, God, for I take refuge in you, and a confession: You are my Lord. Apart from you I have no good thing. He delights in the saints who are on the earth, but he refuses the drink offerings of those who give gifts to another god. Their sorrows shall be multiplied.

David describes God himself as his inheritance. Yahweh assigned my portion and my cup. You made my lot secure. The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places. In ancient Israel land was divided by measuring lines, so David is saying that what God gave him is good. He blesses Yahweh for counsel and says, I have set Yahweh always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

The final verses look beyond death: For you will not leave my soul in Sheol, neither will you allow your holy one to see corruption. In the New Testament, Peter explains that David, who died and was buried, foresaw the resurrection of Christ (Acts 2:25-31), and Paul also cites this verse (Acts 13:35). The psalm ends with joy that lasts: You will show me the path of life. In your presence is fullness of joy. In your right hand there are pleasures forever more.

Show What You Know

  1. What does David mean by Yahweh assigned my portion?

  2. What do the measuring lines refer to?

  3. How does Peter use verse 10?

  4. What is in God's right hand?

  2. How does the resurrection of Jesus give believers hope like the hope in verses 10 and 11?
