The psalm answers four questions. Where? Praise God in his sanctuary and in his heavens. Why? Praise him for his mighty acts and according to his excellent greatness. How? With trumpet, harp and lyre, tambourine and dancing, strings and flute, and loud cymbals.

Who? Let everything that has breath praise Yah! Every living creature is invited. The breath God gave at creation is meant to return to him as praise. Praise Yah!

Everything That Has Breath

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 150 has no title. It is the final Hallelujah psalm and the doxology for the whole book of Psalms. The Psalter is divided into five books, each ending with praise, and Psalm 150 crowns them all. After laments, confessions, and cries from the depths, the journey ends with unbroken praise. Faith does not ignore sorrow, but it ends in worship.

The psalm answers the basic questions of worship. Where? Praise God in his sanctuary! Praise him in his heavens. Worship joins earth and heaven. Why? Praise him for his mighty acts! Praise him according to his excellent greatness! We praise God for what he has done and for who he is. How? With trumpet, harp and lyre, tambourine and dancing, strings and flute, loud and resounding cymbals: every kind of instrument and the whole body.

Who? Let everything that has breath praise Yah! The breath God breathed into the first man (Genesis 2:7) returns to him as praise. The final line sums up the purpose of every living creature. In the New Testament, John sees every creature in heaven and on earth praising God and the Lamb (Revelation 5:13).
