Psalms 15 · Grade 5
Who Can Stand Before God?
Read and Think
Psalm 15's title says it is a Psalm by David. Its question is one every worshiper must face: Yahweh, who shall dwell in your sanctuary? Who shall live on your holy hill? The sanctuary and holy hill point to the place where God made his presence known among Israel. To dwell there is to live in fellowship with the holy God.
The answer is not a ritual but a character. Positively, he walks blamelessly, does what is right, speaks truth in his heart, honors those who fear Yahweh, and keeps an oath even when it hurts. Negatively, he doesn't slander with his tongue, nor does evil to his friend, nor casts slurs against his fellow man, nor lends money for usury, nor takes a bribe against the innocent. Notice how many of these concern words and how we treat our neighbors.
The psalm ends with a promise: He who does these things shall never be shaken. Read honestly, this standard humbles us, because no one keeps it perfectly. In the New Testament, believers see this description fully lived out in Jesus, who didn't sin (1 Peter 2:22). The New Testament teaches that through Christ believers may draw near to God (Hebrews 10:19-22).
