Psalms 149 · Grade 5

Praise and God's Justice

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 149 has no title. As the fourth of the final Hallelujah psalms, it calls God's assembled people to sing to Yahweh a new song. Let Israel rejoice in him who made them. Let the children of Zion be joyful in their King. God is both Maker and King of his people, so their joy rests on who he is.

Worship here is full-bodied: Let them praise his name in the dance! Let them sing praises to him with tambourine and harp! The motive is God's delight: For Yahweh takes pleasure in his people. He crowns the humble with salvation. Salvation is pictured as a crown placed on the humble, honor that God gives rather than earns. Let the saints rejoice in honor. Let them sing for joy on their beds.

Verses 6 to 9 add a hard image: high praises of God in their mouths and a two-edged sword in their hand, to execute on nations the written judgment. In Israel's history, God sometimes used his people to judge wicked nations. These verses show that God's kingdom will overcome evil. Christians read them in light of the New Testament, where the sword of the Spirit is the word of God (Ephesians 6:17) and final judgment belongs to Christ (Revelation 19:15).
