Psalms 149 · Grade 4
A New Song for the King
Read and Think
Psalm 149 has no title. It is the fourth Hallelujah psalm. Praise Yahweh! Sing to Yahweh a new song, his praise in the assembly of the saints. A new song celebrates fresh mercies from God. God's people gather to worship together.
Let Israel rejoice in him who made them. Let the children of Zion be joyful in their King. Their worship is full of life: Let them praise his name in the dance! Let them sing praises to him with tambourine and harp! The reason is God's love: For Yahweh takes pleasure in his people. He crowns the humble with salvation.
The last verses picture God's people with high praises in their mouths and a sword in their hand, carrying out God's written judgment on proud nations. The praise and the sword together show that God will put down evil. Christians believe that judgment belongs to God. In the New Testament, Paul calls God's word the sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17).
