Psalms 148 · Grade 4

A Choir of All Creation

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 148 has no title. It is like a great choir in two parts. The first part is in the heavens: Praise Yahweh from the heavens! Praise him, all his angels! Praise him, sun and moon! Praise him, all you shining stars! Let them praise Yahweh's name, for he commanded, and they were created.

The second part is on the earth. Praise Yahweh from the earth, you great sea creatures, and all depths, lightning and hail, snow and clouds, stormy wind, mountains and hills, fruit trees and cedars, wild animals, livestock, and flying birds. Every created thing praises God by being what he made it to be.

Then people join in: kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and judges, young men and maidens, old men and children. All ages and ranks stand together. Let them praise Yahweh's name, for his name alone is exalted. His glory is above the earth and the heavens.

Show What You Know

  1. What are the two parts of the choir?

  2. Why should the heavens praise Yahweh?

  3. How do created things praise God?

  4. What do the lists of people show?

Psalms 148 · Grade 5

The Universe at Worship

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 148 has no title. It is a sweeping call for the whole universe to praise its Maker, moving from the highest heavens downward to the earth and its people. Praise Yahweh from the heavens! The angels, armies of heaven, sun, moon, stars, and the waters above the heavens are summoned. The reason is creation: for he commanded, and they were created. He has made a decree which will not pass away.

Next comes the earth, from the depths upward: great sea creatures and all depths; lightning and hail, snow and clouds, stormy wind, fulfilling his word. Even storms obey him. Mountains, fruit trees and cedars, wild animals, livestock, small creatures and flying birds join in. Creation praises God not with words but by fulfilling the purpose he gave it.

Finally humanity is called: kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and judges, young men and maidens, old men and children. Rank, gender, and age make no difference in this choir. Let them praise Yahweh's name, for his name alone is exalted. The psalm ends with God's special care for his people, a people near to him. In the New Testament, Paul writes that every knee should bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord (Philippians 2:10-11).

Show What You Know

  1. In what direction does the psalm move?

  2. How do storms take part in praise?

  3. What makes no difference in the human choir?

  4. Which New Testament verses picture every tongue confessing Jesus as Lord?
