Psalms 148 · Grade 5
The Universe at Worship
Read and Think
Psalm 148 has no title. It is a sweeping call for the whole universe to praise its Maker, moving from the highest heavens downward to the earth and its people. Praise Yahweh from the heavens! The angels, armies of heaven, sun, moon, stars, and the waters above the heavens are summoned. The reason is creation: for he commanded, and they were created. He has made a decree which will not pass away.
Next comes the earth, from the depths upward: great sea creatures and all depths; lightning and hail, snow and clouds, stormy wind, fulfilling his word. Even storms obey him. Mountains, fruit trees and cedars, wild animals, livestock, small creatures and flying birds join in. Creation praises God not with words but by fulfilling the purpose he gave it.
Finally humanity is called: kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and judges, young men and maidens, old men and children. Rank, gender, and age make no difference in this choir. Let them praise Yahweh's name, for his name alone is exalted. The psalm ends with God's special care for his people, a people near to him. In the New Testament, Paul writes that every knee should bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord (Philippians 2:10-11).
