Psalms 146 · Grade 4

A Better Hope Than Princes

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 146 has no title. It is the first of five psalms (146 to 150) that each begin and end with Praise Yah, which in Hebrew is Hallelujah. The singer commits his whole life to praise: While I live, I will praise Yahweh. I will sing praises to my God as long as I exist.

Then comes a warning. Don't put your trust in princes, in a son of man in whom there is no help. Human leaders are mortal. His spirit departs, and he returns to the earth. In that very day, his thoughts perish. Their plans die with them.

By contrast, Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in Yahweh, his God. God made heaven and earth and keeps truth forever. The psalm lists his care: justice for the oppressed, food for the hungry, freedom for prisoners, sight for the blind, help for foreigners, orphans, and widows. Yahweh will reign forever.

  1. What do Psalms 146 to 150 have in common?

  2. Why should we not trust in princes?

  3. Name three groups God cares for.

  4. How long will Yahweh reign?

Psalms 146 · Grade 5

The King Who Cares for the Needy

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 146 has no title. It opens the final Hallelujah psalms (146 to 150), each framed by Praise Yah. The singer vows lifelong worship: While I live, I will praise Yahweh. Praise is not only an emotion but a commitment for as long as I exist.

The psalm contrasts two kinds of trust. Don't put your trust in princes, in a son of man in whom there is no help. Even the most powerful ruler dies: his spirit departs, he returns to the earth, and in that very day his thoughts perish. Trust placed in mortal power is fragile.

Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help. This God is Creator of heaven, earth, and sea; he keeps truth forever. His reign is shown in his care for the powerless: justice for the oppressed, food for the hungry, freedom for prisoners, sight for the blind, upholding foreigners, the fatherless, and widows. In the New Testament, Jesus' works match this list, as he tells John's disciples the blind receive their sight (Matthew 11:5).

Show What You Know

  1. How does the singer show that praise is a commitment?

  2. Why is trust in mortal power fragile?

  3. How is God's reign shown?

  4. How do Jesus' works match the psalm's list?
