Psalms 145 · Grade 4

The Greatness and Goodness of the King

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 145 is titled A praise psalm by David. It is the only psalm whose title calls itself a praise psalm. In Hebrew it is an acrostic, each verse beginning with the next letter. David begins, I will exalt you, my God, the King. Every day I will praise you. Great is Yahweh, and greatly to be praised! His greatness is unsearchable.

God's greatness is matched by his goodness. Yahweh is gracious, merciful, slow to anger, and of great loving kindness. This echoes what God told Moses about himself (Exodus 34:6). Yahweh is good to all. His tender mercies are over all his works. One generation will commend your works to another.

God's kingdom is everlasting, yet he cares for the weak. Yahweh upholds all who fall, and raises up all those who are bowed down. The eyes of all wait for you. You give them their food in due season. Yahweh is near to all those who call on him in truth. He preserves all who love him, but he will destroy the wicked. My mouth will speak the praise of Yahweh.
