Psalms 144 · Grade 5

Blessed Are the People Whose God Is Yahweh

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 144 is titled By David. It gathers phrases from earlier psalms, especially Psalm 18 and Psalm 8. Blessed be Yahweh, my rock, who trains my hands to war. David names God as his loving kindness, fortress, high tower, deliverer, and shield. A king's victories were God's gifts, not his own achievements.

At the center is a question from Psalm 8: Yahweh, what is man, that you care for him? Here it is answered with a sobering picture: Man is like a breath. His days are like a shadow that passes away. Human life is brief, which makes God's care all the more amazing. David asks God to part the heavens and come down to rescue him, then promises a new song on a ten-stringed lyre.

The psalm closes with a vision of a blessed community: sons like well-nurtured plants, daughters like pillars carved to adorn a palace, full barns, flocks in the thousands, and streets with no outcry. Peace and plenty are signs of God's favor. The final line names the source: Happy are the people whose God is Yahweh. In the New Testament, Hebrews 2:6 quotes the same question from Psalm 8, What is man, that you think of him? and applies it to Jesus.

Take It Home

For families: talk about these together.

  • David blessed God who subdues peoples under him. How does God's mercy to you shape how you treat those under your authority?
  • David asked God to bow the heavens and come down. How can you turn a big request into honest prayer?
  • What is one way you could live out this chapter this week?
