Psalm 144 is titled By David. It begins with praise from a warrior king: Blessed be Yahweh, my rock, who trains my hands to war. David piles up names for God: my loving kindness, my fortress, my high tower, my deliverer, my shield. Every strength David has comes from God.

Then David is amazed. Yahweh, what is man, that you care for him? Or the son of man, that you think of him? Man is like a breath. His days are like a shadow that passes away. The great God bends down to care for people who are as brief as a breath.

David asks God to rescue him from deceitful foreigners. He promises, I will sing a new song to you, God. He then pictures the blessing of peace: sons like well-nurtured plants, daughters like carved pillars, full barns, many sheep, and no outcry in the streets. Happy are the people whose God is Yahweh.
