Alone but Not Abandoned

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 142 is titled A contemplation by David, when he was in the cave. A Prayer. In that dark place he cried with his voice to Yahweh. I pour out my complaint before him. I tell him my troubles. Honest prayer tells God everything.

David felt utterly alone. Look on my right, and see; for there is no one who is concerned for me. Refuge has fled from me. No one cares for my soul. Yet even then he says, When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, you knew my route. God knew his path when he could not see it.

So David turns fully to God: You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living. A portion is a share of land or inheritance; David says God himself is his share. He asks, Bring my soul out of prison, that I may give thanks to your name. He ends in hope: The righteous will surround me, for you will be good to me.

Prayer in the Dark Places

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 142 is titled A contemplation by David, when he was in the cave. A Prayer. The title does not say which cave. Psalm 57 has a similar title. The cave was both a shelter and a prison, a place of safety and deep loneliness.

David's prayer is loud and honest. I cry with my voice to Yahweh. With my voice, I ask Yahweh for mercy. I pour out my complaint before him. Complaint here means bringing a burden to God, not grumbling against him. When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, you knew my route. Even when David's strength failed, God's knowledge did not.

The turning point is a confession of trust: You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living. No human was concerned for him, but God was his shelter and his inheritance. Bring my soul out of prison, that I may give thanks to your name. The psalm ends with community restored: The righteous will surround me, for you will be good to me. In the New Testament, Hebrews 13:5 gives God's promise, I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you.

Show What You Know

  1. What does the title say about where David was?

  2. What does complaint mean in this psalm?

  3. How is the cave both a shelter and a prison?

  4. Which New Testament verse promises God will never leave us?
