Psalms 142 · Grade 5

Prayer in the Dark Places

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 142 is titled A contemplation by David, when he was in the cave. A Prayer. The title does not say which cave. Psalm 57 has a similar title. The cave was both a shelter and a prison, a place of safety and deep loneliness.

David's prayer is loud and honest. I cry with my voice to Yahweh. With my voice, I ask Yahweh for mercy. I pour out my complaint before him. Complaint here means bringing a burden to God, not grumbling against him. When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, you knew my route. Even when David's strength failed, God's knowledge did not.

The turning point is a confession of trust: You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living. No human was concerned for him, but God was his shelter and his inheritance. Bring my soul out of prison, that I may give thanks to your name. The psalm ends with community restored: The righteous will surround me, for you will be good to me. In the New Testament, Hebrews 13:5 gives God's promise, I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you.
