Prayer, Speech, and Correction

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 141 is titled A Psalm by David. David begins urgently: Yahweh, I have called on you. Come to me quickly! He asks, Let my prayer be set before you like incense; the lifting up of my hands like the evening sacrifice. In the temple, incense rose to God each evening. David wants his prayer to rise just as surely.

He knows his own weakness. Set a watch, Yahweh, before my mouth. Keep the door of my lips. Don't incline my heart to any evil thing. He even refuses to share the fine food of people who do wrong, so he will not be pulled into their ways.

David also welcomes correction: Let the righteous strike me, it is kindness; let him reprove me, it is like oil on the head. A true friend's correction is a gift. He ends, For my eyes are on you, Yahweh, the Lord. I take refuge in you. Keep me from the snare which they have laid for me.

A Watch Over the Heart and Lips

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 141 is titled A Psalm by David. It is an evening prayer. Let my prayer be set before you like incense; the lifting up of my hands like the evening sacrifice. In Israel the evening offering and incense marked the close of the day (Exodus 30:8). David asks that his prayer be received the same way. In the New Testament, Revelation 8:4 pictures the prayers of the saints rising with incense before God.

The heart of the psalm is a prayer for self-control. Set a watch, Yahweh, before my mouth. Keep the door of my lips. Don't incline my heart to any evil thing, to practice deeds of wickedness with men who work iniquity. Don't let me eat of their delicacies. David knows temptation often comes as pleasant company and good food.

He also chooses to welcome rebuke: Let the righteous strike me, it is kindness; let him reprove me, it is like oil on the head; don't let my head refuse it. Humility receives correction as honor. The psalm ends with trust: For my eyes are on you, Yahweh, the Lord. I take refuge in you. Don't leave my soul destitute. In the New Testament, James writes that nobody can tame the tongue (James 3:8).

  2. How does temptation often come, according to the psalm?
