Psalms 140 · Grade 5

Justice for the Afflicted

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 140 is titled For the Chief Musician. A Psalm by David. David describes enemies whose weapons are words and schemes. They devise mischief in their hearts. They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent. Viper's poison is under their lips. In the New Testament, Paul quotes this line in Romans 3:13 to show how sin reaches human speech.

Against hidden traps, David holds onto a personal relationship. I said to Yahweh, You are my God. Yahweh, the Lord, the strength of my salvation, you have covered my head in the day of battle. He asks God not to grant the desires of the wicked or let their evil plans succeed.

David's prayers in verses 9 to 11 ask that the trouble his enemies planned would fall on themselves. They are the honest words of a man in danger asking God for justice. Christians read them as trusting God, not themselves, to judge. David's last words are calm: I know that Yahweh will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and justice for the needy. The upright will dwell in your presence.

Show What You Know

  1. How does Paul use this psalm?

  2. What relationship does David hold onto?

  3. What do verses 9 to 11 ask?

  4. How do Christians read those verses?
