Psalms 139 · Grade 5
The God Who Knows, Is Present, and Creates
Read and Think
Psalm 139 is titled For the Chief Musician. A Psalm by David. It moves through three great truths about God. First, God knows everything: Yahweh, you have searched me, and you know me. He knows David's sitting down and rising up, his thoughts from afar, and every word before it is spoken. David responds with wonder: This knowledge is beyond me. It's lofty. I can't attain it.
Second, God is present everywhere. Where could I go from your Spirit? Or where could I flee from your presence? If I ascend up into heaven, you are there. If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, you are there! Even the darkness is like light to God. For David this is comfort, not threat: even there your hand will lead me.
Third, God is the Creator of each person. You knit me together in my mother's womb. I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your eyes saw my body. In your book they were all written, the days that were ordained for me. David then speaks strongly about God's enemies, showing that he sides with God against evil. But he turns that searching light on himself: Search me, God, and know my heart. In the New Testament, Paul writes that God has known those who love him (1 Corinthians 8:3).
