Psalms 139 · Grade 4
Known and Loved by God
Read and Think
Psalm 139 is titled For the Chief Musician. A Psalm by David. It begins, Yahweh, you have searched me, and you know me. God knows David's sitting down and his rising up, his paths and his thoughts, and every word on his tongue before he says it. This knowledge is beyond me, David says.
Next, David asks, Where could I go from your Spirit? Or where could I flee from your presence? Heaven, the grave, the farthest sea, or the darkest night: God is there. Even the darkness doesn't hide from you, but the night shines as the day.
Then David praises God as his Maker: You knit me together in my mother's womb. I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. God saw him before he was born and planned his days. After a few verses about God's enemies, David ends with a humble prayer: Search me, God, and know my heart. See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way.
