Psalms 136 · Grade 5
The Steadfast Love of God
Read and Think
Psalm 136 has no title and is sometimes called the Great Hallel, a great song of praise. Every verse ends with the refrain for his loving kindness endures forever. The Hebrew word for loving kindness is hesed, God's loyal, covenant love that never gives up on his people. The repetition invites a congregation to respond together, driving the truth deep into memory.
The psalm surveys the whole sweep of God's work. It begins with who God is: the God of gods and Lord of lords, who alone does great wonders. Then creation: he made the heavens by understanding, spread out the earth, and made the great lights. Then redemption: he brought Israel out of Egypt with a strong hand and an outstretched arm, divided the Red Sea, led his people through the wilderness, and gave them land as a heritage.
The last verses bring the story into the present. He remembered us in our low estate and has delivered us from our adversaries. He gives food to every creature. Every event, large or small, is an expression of the same steadfast love. In the New Testament, Paul says that nothing can separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:39).
