Psalms 136 · Grade 4
A Song with a Refrain
Read and Think
Psalm 136 has no title. It is unique because every one of its 26 verses ends with the same refrain: for his loving kindness endures forever. Every verse ends with the same refrain: for his loving kindness endures forever.
The psalm tells a story in order. It begins with God as Creator: to him who by understanding made the heavens, who spread out the earth, who made the great lights, the sun to rule by day, the moon and stars to rule by night.
Then it moves to Israel's history. God brought Israel out of Egypt with a strong hand. He divided the Red Sea and led his people through the wilderness. He gave them a land. The psalm ends with care for all: who remembered us in our low estate, who gives food to every creature. Oh give thanks to the God of heaven.
