Psalms 135 · Grade 4
The Living God and Lifeless Idols
Read and Think
Psalm 135 has no title. It calls the servants of Yahweh who stand in his house to praise him. Praise Yah, for Yahweh is good. For Yah has chosen Jacob for himself, Israel for his own possession. God's choosing is a reason for joy.
The psalmist says, For I know that Yahweh is great, that our Lord is above all gods. Whatever Yahweh pleased, that he has done, in heaven and in earth. He raises the clouds, makes lightning with the rain, and brings the wind out of his treasuries. He also acted in history, sending signs in Egypt and giving Israel the land as a heritage.
In contrast, the idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of men's hands. They have mouths, but they can't speak. They have eyes, but they can't see. Those who make them will be like them. The psalm ends by calling the houses of Israel, Aaron, and Levi, and all who fear Yahweh, to praise him.
