Ending the Journey with Blessing

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 134 is titled A Song of Ascents and names no author. It is the fifteenth and final Song of Ascents. Psalm 120 began with a singer living far away among people who hate peace; Psalm 134 ends in the sanctuary itself, with praise rising through the night. The collection traces a journey from distress to worship.

Look! Praise Yahweh, all you servants of Yahweh, who stand by night in Yahweh's house! Some Levites were busy with their work day and night (1 Chronicles 9:33). The call, Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, invites them to fill the quiet hours with worship rather than mere duty.

The psalm closes with a priestly-sounding blessing: May Yahweh bless you from Zion, even he who made heaven and earth. Earlier Songs of Ascents confessed that help comes from the Maker of heaven and earth (Psalm 121:2; 124:8), and now that same Creator sends his people home with a blessing. In the New Testament, Revelation pictures God's servants serving him day and night in his temple (Revelation 7:15).
