Psalms 133 · Grade 5
Unity as God's Gift
Read and Think
Psalm 133 is titled A Song of Ascents. By David. It is only three verses, but it gives a beautiful picture of God's people together. See how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to live together in unity!
The oil image comes from Aaron's anointing as high priest (Exodus 29:7). The precious oil ran down on the beard, even Aaron's beard, that came down on the edge of his robes. The movement is downward and abundant, flowing from the head over the whole body. Unity is holy and fragrant, like the oil that set apart the priest who represented all the tribes.
The dew image comes from Mount Hermon in the far north, famous for heavy dew. To picture Hermon's dew falling on Zion's hills is to imagine blessing from far away refreshing the center of worship. The psalm ends with God's gift: for there Yahweh gives the blessing, even life forever more. Unity is not something people simply build; it is a place where God chooses to bless. In the New Testament, Paul urges believers to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (Ephesians 4:3).
