The Quiet Soul

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 131 is titled A Song of Ascents. By David. It is one of the shortest psalms, but it describes a deep peace. Yahweh, my heart isn't arrogant, nor my eyes lofty. Pride looks down on others and reaches for what belongs to God.

David continues: nor do I concern myself with great matters, or things too wonderful for me. He accepts that some things belong to God alone. Humility is not a lack of thinking; it is trusting God with what we cannot know.

Surely I have stilled and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with his mother. A nursing baby fusses for milk, but a weaned child sits calmly, content just to be with his mother. David's peace comes from being with God, not from getting what he wants. He ends by inviting all Israel to that hope.

Psalms 131 · Grade 5

Contentment in God's Presence

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 131 is titled A Song of Ascents. By David. In three verses it paints a portrait of humble trust. Yahweh, my heart isn't arrogant, nor my eyes lofty. The heart is the inner life, and the eyes show outward ambition. David's humility reaches both.

He refuses to concern himself with great matters, or things too wonderful for me. This is not laziness but a right sense of being a creature before the Creator. Some mysteries belong to God, and peace comes from leaving them with him rather than demanding answers.

The central image is tender. Surely I have stilled and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with his mother. The verbs show effort: David has stilled himself. A weaned child no longer demands food but rests in the mother's presence. So David's soul rests in God himself, not only in his gifts. In the New Testament, Jesus says that whoever humbles himself as a little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven (Matthew 18:4).

Show What You Know

  1. What do the heart and eyes stand for?

  2. Why does David leave great matters alone?

  3. What do the verbs stilled and quieted show?

  4. How does Matthew 18:4 connect to the psalm?
