From the Depths to Hope

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 130 is titled A Song of Ascents and names no author. It begins at the lowest place: Out of the depths I have cried to you, Yahweh. The depths picture deep waters, a place of danger and despair. The singer's trouble is tied to sin, and he asks God to hear him.

He faces the truth: If you, Yah, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand? No one could. But there is forgiveness with you, therefore you are feared. God's forgiveness does not make people careless; it makes them worship him with awe.

Then the singer waits. I wait for Yahweh. My soul waits. I hope in his word. He longs for the Lord more than watchmen long for the morning, repeating the phrase because the night feels long. Finally he speaks to everyone: Israel, hope in Yahweh, for there is loving kindness with Yahweh. He will redeem Israel from all their sins.

  1. What do the depths picture?

  2. Why could no one stand if God kept a record of sins?

Psalms 130 · Grade 5

Forgiveness That Leads to Awe

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 130 is titled A Song of Ascents and names no author. Christians have long counted it among the penitential psalms, prayers of sorrow for sin. It begins, Out of the depths I have cried to you, Yahweh. The depths are the deep waters of chaos and despair, and here they are linked to guilt.

The center of the psalm is honest about sin and hopeful about grace. If you, Yah, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand? The answer is no one. But there is forgiveness with you, therefore you are feared. Forgiveness does not cheapen God's holiness; it draws people to revere the God who forgives freely.

Waiting fills the second half. I wait for Yahweh. My soul waits. I hope in his word. The watchman on the city wall at night could not make dawn come faster, but he knew it would come. So the singer waits for God with sure hope. He ends by inviting all Israel to hope, because with Yahweh there is loving kindness and abundant redemption. He will redeem Israel from all their sins. In the New Testament, John writes that if we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us (1 John 1:9).

Show What You Know

  1. What are the penitential psalms?

  2. Why does forgiveness lead to reverence instead of carelessness?

  3. What does the watchman picture teach about waiting?

  4. Which New Testament verse speaks of confessing sins?
