Psalms 13 · Grade 4

An Honest Prayer

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 13's title says it is for the Chief Musician and is a Psalm by David. It is one of the shortest psalms, but it moves from deep sorrow to joy. David begins by asking How long four times. He asks if Yahweh will forget him forever and how long God will hide his face. He has sorrow in his heart every day, and he wonders how long his enemy will triumph over him.

Next, David prays. He asks God to look and answer him and give light to his eyes, so that he will not sleep in death and his enemy will not say he has won. Finally, the psalm turns: But I trust in your loving kindness. My heart rejoices in your salvation. I will sing to Yahweh, because he has been good to me. David's problems are not yet solved, but he chooses to trust God.

Psalms 13 · Grade 5

From Complaint to Song

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 13's title says it is for the Chief Musician and is a Psalm by David. In only six verses it shows a pattern found in many psalms: complaint, request, and trust. The complaint is honest. David asks How long four times: Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart every day? How long shall my enemy triumph over me?

The request is urgent: Behold, and answer me, Yahweh, my God. Give light to my eyes, lest I sleep in death. David fears that his enemy will say, I have prevailed against him, and that his adversaries will rejoice when he falls. Light to the eyes may mean renewed strength and hope.

The trust comes with a turn: But I trust in your loving kindness. My heart rejoices in your salvation. I will sing to Yahweh, because he has been good to me. Nothing in the psalm says the trouble ended. David's song rests on God's loving kindness and on what God has already done, not on his circumstances. This teaches believers that honest questions and real faith can live side by side.

  2. What does David fear his enemy will say?
