The Blessed Household

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 128 is titled A Song of Ascents and names no author. It begins, Blessed is everyone who fears Yahweh, who walks in his ways. To fear Yahweh means to honor him with deep respect and trust. That fear shows in how a person walks, the choices of daily life.

The blessing reaches into ordinary things: work, meals, and family. You will eat the labor of your hands. You will be happy, and it will be well with you. A wife is pictured as a fruitful vine in the house, and children like olive shoots around the table. Olive trees live for centuries, so the picture suggests a family that grows strong.

The last verses widen the blessing from one home to the whole people. May Yahweh bless you out of Zion, and may you see the good of Jerusalem all the days of your life. Yes, may you see your children's children. Peace be upon Israel.

Ordinary Life Under God's Blessing

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 128 is titled A Song of Ascents and names no author. It follows Psalm 127, which said that Yahweh builds the house, and shows what that blessed house looks like. Blessed is everyone who fears Yahweh, who walks in his ways. The fear of Yahweh is reverent trust that shapes behavior; it is the root of wisdom in Proverbs.

The blessings are everyday ones. You will eat the labor of your hands, the opposite of work stolen or wasted. Your wife will be as a fruitful vine in the innermost parts of your house, your children like olive shoots around your table. Vines and olives were two of Israel's most valued plants, giving wine and oil. The family table becomes a picture of God's goodness.

The final blessing comes out of Zion, from God's presence in Jerusalem, and extends to the next generations: may you see your children's children. The individual home and the whole nation belong together, so the psalm ends, Peace be upon Israel. In the New Testament, Paul says that godliness has value in all things, having the promise of the life which is now and of that which is to come (1 Timothy 4:8).

Show What You Know

  1. How does Psalm 128 relate to Psalm 127?

  2. Why are vines and olives meaningful pictures?

  3. From where does the final blessing come?

  4. Which New Testament verse speaks of godliness having promise for this life and the next?
