Psalms 126 · Grade 5

Joy Remembered, Joy Hoped For

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 126 is titled A Song of Ascents and names no author. It has two halves. The first remembers a restoration so great that the people felt they were dreaming. The second asks God to do it again. Faith often lives between a past rescue and a hoped-for one.

When Yahweh brought back those who returned to Zion, we were like those who dream. Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing. Their joy was so visible that the nations said, Yahweh has done great things for them. God's people answered, Yahweh has done great things for us, and we are glad. Joy in God is meant to be seen.

The second half prays, Restore our fortunes again, Yahweh, like the streams in the Negev. Those dry desert channels can flood overnight after rain, a picture of sudden renewal. Then comes the farmer's picture: Those who sow in tears will reap in joy. He who goes out weeping, carrying seed for sowing, will certainly come again with joy, carrying his sheaves. In the New Testament, Jesus promises his disciples that their sorrow will be turned into joy (John 16:20).
