Psalms 122 · Grade 5

The Joy of Gathered Worship

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 122 is titled A Song of Ascents. By David. Its first line expresses joy: I was glad when they said to me, Let's go to Yahweh's house! The voice of the community calls the individual to worship, and he responds with gladness rather than duty alone.

The second verse says, Our feet are standing within your gates, Jerusalem! The city is compact together, a picture of the unity of the tribes. They go up according to an ordinance for Israel, to give thanks to Yahweh's name. Jerusalem held both the house of God and the thrones for judgment of David's house, so worship and justice belonged together.

The last verses turn to prayer. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. The Hebrew words for peace, shalom, and Jerusalem sound alike, a wordplay that fits a city whose name was linked to peace. David prays, Peace be within your walls, and prosperity within your palaces. He prays this for the sake of his brothers and companions and for the sake of the house of Yahweh our God. In the New Testament, Christians see that Jesus brings peace that unites people in God's household (Ephesians 2:14-19).

  1. How does the community appear in verse 1?
