Psalms 121 · Grade 5

The God Who Keeps

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 121 is titled A Song of Ascents and names no author. The psalm begins with a question many people ask in trouble: I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? The answer points beyond the hills to the one who made them: My help comes from Yahweh, who made heaven and earth.

The Hebrew word for keep appears six times in eight verses. God keeps his people with constant attention: he will not allow your foot to be moved; he will neither slumber nor sleep. Unlike the gods of the nations, who were imagined as sleeping, Yahweh is always awake. Yahweh is your shade on your right hand. Shade on the right hand pictures a protector standing close beside you.

The psalm widens from one step to a whole life. Yahweh will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. Yahweh will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more. This does not promise a life with no trouble, but it promises that God's care never stops. In the New Testament, Jesus says that no one can snatch his sheep out of his hand (John 10:28).
