Flattering Lips and Flawless Words

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 12's title says it is for the Chief Musician, upon an eight-stringed lyre, and is a Psalm of David. It is a prayer about speech. David laments that the godly man ceases and that everyone lies to his neighbor with flattering lips and a double heart. He prays that Yahweh will cut off flattering lips and the tongue that boasts. The proud claim their tongues will prevail and that no one is lord over them.

At the center, Yahweh speaks: because of the oppression of the weak and the groaning of the needy, he will now arise and set the needy in safety from those who malign them. God sees how lying words harm vulnerable people, and he acts on their behalf.

Then comes the key contrast: Yahweh's words are flawless words, as silver refined in a clay furnace, purified seven times. Seven is a number of completeness, so the image means God's words are completely pure. The psalm ends honestly, noting that the wicked walk on every side when what is vile is exalted, yet it trusts that Yahweh will keep and preserve the needy forever.
